……………and was the mid point of an excellent walk – the final one of the Coastwise Summer Programme – which was organised and guided by Martin Corfe.

The route took in Kilkhampton Common, Lee Wood in the Coombe Valley, and then Duckpool.

The return was via the Stowe Barton side of the valley and passed Kilkhampton Castle before finishing at the church.

The castle is a motte and bailey construction, built in the mid-12thCentury, possibly by the Grenville family. It is in astonishingly good condition considering the age, and is of unusual configuration, with an inner and outer bailey, and a high motte separed by a deep ditch. It commands an uninterrupted view down the valley to the sea.

Pictures show Duckpool, Sanctuary Farm across the Coombe Valley, and Kilkhampton Castle.

Duckpool really does have ducks…..
