The Common Piddock bores into soft rocks and other material using the ridges on its shell. As it bores, it grows itself into the rock where it must spend the rest of its up to 8 – year life. Rarely seen in North Devon's hard rock, though there are remains of piddocks in the submerged forest at Westward Ho! Coastwise members were fascinated to see this one, shown to us by David Fenwick during our visit to Penzance.
