Coastwise members were challenged by Elaine Hayes, manager of the North Devon AONB, to become creative, and help her make Wordles. Now that the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN Cat. V)) has designated Seascape as of equal importance to Landscape, the AONB is including Seascape as part of its brief. For those of you who've not quite caught up yet, a Wordle is a neologism for word doodle reflecting a set of words, with the refinement that the more frequently occurring appear with a larger font.
Elaine used this device to get Coastwise thinking about what is important about seascape, and particularly in North Devon. She will be spreading the word in 2014 prior to the official incorporation in the AONB remit in 2015.
Elaine outlines how other areas have assessed Seascape, and gave an example from Dorset's Jurassic Coast (see Links).
To stimulate imaginations, she also gave a personal overview of prose and poetry about the sea, and pointed out the sensory range as seacape can at times be tasted and smelt, unlike landscape.
